Donald was born circa March 1859 at West Derby Registration District, Liverpool.2,3,1 He was the son of Donald Nicholson and Elizabeth Ann Medhurst. He presumably lived with his parents at 31 Myrtle Street, Liverpool, in 1860.4
He was recorded as living with his parents, a servant and his siblings Thomas and Alexander in the 1861 census at Liverpool. He was recorded as being 2 years old.5
His mother died 6 March 1865 at the age of 28. His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.3
He was recorded as living with his father and stepmother, his father and step-mother's infant boy, and his siblings Thomas, Alexander, William and Jane in the 1871 census at 3 Edgar Terrace Hulton Street, Moss Side, Manchester. He was recorded as being 13 years old.3 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.3 Donald was employed in the Merchant Navy at Liverpool on 8 December 1875. He served aboard the 'Fiji' for the first three years..6
On Thursday, 10 February 1881 he was awarded his certificate of competency as a second mate in the merchant service.7,8
He was recorded as living with his father and his father's second wife, a servant and his step-siblings Charles, Angus, George and Lily in the 1881 census at Plumley Moor, Plumley, Cheshire. He was recorded as being 22 years old.9 His occupation was recorded as being a 'second officer in merchant service sailing ship' in the census.9
On Friday, 14 September 1883 he was awarded his certificate of competency as a first mate in the merchant service.10
Donald died before 1924.11
