Alexander was born circa December 1860 at Liverpool.1,2 He was the son of Donald Nicholson and Elizabeth Ann Medhurst.
He was recorded as living with his parents, a servant and his siblings Donald and Thomas in the 1861 census at 31 Myrtle Street, Liverpool. He was recorded as being just 6 months old.3
His mother died 6 March 1865 at the age of 28.
He was recorded as living with his father and stepmother, his father and step-mother's infant boy, and his siblings Thomas, Donald, William and Jane in the 1871 census at 3 Edgar Terrace Hulton Street, Moss Side, Manchester. He was recorded as being 11 years old.2 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.2
Alexander died on 17 June 1878 at Plumley, Cheshire.4,5
