Catherine was born at 115 Oxford Street on Thursday, 27 September 1866 at the Melbourne suburb of East Collingwood.1,2,3,4,5 Her common name was Kate. She was the daughter of Peter Carroll and Margaret Dolan. She presumably lived with her parents at East Collingwood on 13 February 1867. The house was a 2 room wooden house.6,7 She presumably lived with her parents at at Perry Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood on 18 January 1871. Their house was a wooden house.8 She presumably lived with her parents at Collingwood on 6 March 1872. Their house was a brick house.9 She presumably lived with her parents at Collingwood on 3 January 1873.10 She presumably lived with her parents at at 36 Perry Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood on 28 January 1874.11,12

It's impossible to say how Catherine and Charles first met. However, Catherine lived in Perry Street close to Albert Oaten, Charles Henry Oaten's uncle in the mid 1870's; later, their parents both moved to Sackville Street, Collingwood. She presumably lived with her parents at at 38 Perry Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood on 12 January 1876.13,14

She married Charles Henry Oaten, a bootmaker, son of Charles Oaten and Harriet Louisa Roberts, in a Baptist ceremony at the Baptist Church Gore Street on Saturday, 14 March 1885 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. She was 18 and her husband Charles was 19. However, both Charles and Kate stated their ages as 21. Apparently this marriage, to a Catholic, scandalised the family and caused Charles' father to dis-inherit his grandchildren..17 Catherine Carroll was also known as Katie.18

Some records suggest that Charles and Catherine initially lived with his recently widowed father and siblings in Collingwood after their marriage but other records suggest they had rented their own place in nearby Gore Street at number 139a. However, it seems likely that the newly weds moved into a house two doors down from his family home for a short while, but then found themselves in Wellington Street, a five minute walk away.19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28

By 1888, Charles and Catherine no longer lived with his father but at an adjoining house at at 1 Sackville Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.

Kate, aged 21 and Charles Henry Oaten, aged 22 became the parents of Albert Edward Oaten on Monday, 16 April 1888 at Collingwood.29,28

In the early 1890's, the family moved a number of times, never staying more than a year or two; to 58 Easey Street Collingwood, then Henderson Street Northcote, then back to Easey Street but this time at number 134 (a small single storey, single-fronted terrace house). By 1896 they finally came to 44 Hilton Street in Clifton Hill - also a single storey, single-fronted terrace house - where their next two children were born.30,23,31,32,33,34

She presumably lived with her spouse Charles at at 105 Spensley Street in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill in December 1897. This house was a wooden house, marked as 103 in the rate book for this year but likley No. 105 (as was same house renumbered in the subsequent year).35,36

The Oaten family moved house again, firstly to 84 Sackville Street, then to 35 Emma Street Collingwood.37,38,39

On 23 July 1901 Charles apparently left the family home leaving Catherine and their seven children aged 2 months to 14 years.40

Six days later, Catherine took Charles to the Court of Petty Sessions on a summons and got a judgement against him, saying that:
on the 23rd of July 1901, at Northcote did leave her lawful children named Lilly, Albert, Kate, Charles, Henry, Maggie and Alice, without adequate means of support

He was ordered to pay 2/6 per week for each child, and to enter into a security for each of £10. He had 7 days to find this large amount (which amounted to more than a month's wages.)40

Kate died on 6 October 1901 at Alfred Hospital, in Melbourne, at age 35 apparently of pneumonia.41,42,43

Her body was interred at Melbourne General Cemetery on 8 October 1901 at the Melbourne suburb of Carlton. She is buried in plot MGC-RC-Comp-X-No-72.44
