Matthew Hornby was likely born on 5 December 1811.2 He was probably baptised on Thursday, 2 July 1812 at the village of Turton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire.2 He may have been born circa 1813 at Turton, Bolton, Lancashire.3 Matthew lived in July 1816 at Turton, Bolton, Lancashire.1

He married Mary Mayoh, at St. Peter's on Monday, 6 February 1837 at Bolton, Lancashire..4,5

He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Mary Mayoh (which other records indicate is his spouse) at at Mason Row in the village of Turton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire. He was 29 years old.5 His occupation was recorded as being a bleacher in the census.5 Matthew Hornby was a crofter in July 1848.1

He married Elizabeth Horrocks, daughter of a wheelwright, at St. Peter on Sunday, 2 July 1848 at Bolton-le-Moors, Bolton, Lancashire..1 Matthew lived in April 1861 at 40 Harlington Street, in Openshaw, Manchester. He was boarding in the house of John Booth, a forgeman, and his family whilst his wife and family still lived in the Turton district.3 He was a bleacher at Openshaw, Manchester.3 His occupation was recorded as being a bleacher in the census.6

He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Elizabeth Horrocks as his spouse at the village of Egerton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire. He was 59 years old.6

Matthew may have died in June 1878 at Bolton Registration District, Lancashire, at age 66.7
