Mary Hornby was born in 1852 at the village of Turton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire.1 She was the daughter of Matthew Hornby and Elizabeth Horrocks.1

She was recorded as living with her mother and older siblings Thomasson and Ann in the 1861 census at the village of Egerton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 52 years old; also living in the house was her step-daughter, her two daughters and a family of lodgers.1 Her occupation was recorded as being a factory worker in the census.1

She was recorded as living with her parents and older sister Thomasson in the 1871 census at Egerton, Bolton, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 19 years old.2 Mary Hornby was a 'doubler cotton'(?)2
