Martha Ann Nicholson was born on 20 May 1845 at Little Meols, West Kirby, Cheshire.2,3,4 She was the daughter of Alexander Nicholson and Martha Davies.1
She was recorded as living with her mother and siblings Alexander, Donald, Thomas, Effie and Malcolm in the 1851 census at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 5 years old.3 Her occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.3
She was recorded as living with her mother and younger brother Malcolm in the 1861 census at 22 Village Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 15 years old.5,6 Her occupation was recorded as being a pupil teacher in the census.5
Martha Ann Nicholson married Thomas Ellis, son of Samuel Ellis, on Tuesday, 27 March 1866 at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire.7
Her father died 25 January 1871 at the age of 62. Martha was aged 25 when this happened.
She was recorded as living with her mother and her two children Samuel and Amy in the 1871 census at Bird's Yard, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 25 years old. This was likely the same place as they were in the previous census ten years ago as all their neighbours were the same.8 Her occupation was recorded as being a domestic servant in the census.8
Martha Ann Nicholson was recorded as the spouse of Thomas Ellis in the 1881 census at Marmion Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 35 years old. Also living in the house were five of their children.9
Martha Ann Nicholson was recorded as the spouse of Thomas Ellis in the 1891 census at Church Gap Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 45 years old. Also living in the house were six of their children aged 7 to 24.10
After the death of Thomas, his widow Martha ran a lodging house andshe was recorded as head of household in the 1901 census at 13 Alderley Road, Hoylake, Cheshire. She was 55 years old. Also living in the house were four of her children and four guests.11
She was recorded as living with her daughter Ida and her family in the 1911 census at 49 Bridge Road, Litherland, Liverpool. She was recorded as being 65 years old.12
Martha may have died circa March 1932 at West Derby Registration District, Liverpool.13
