Amy was born circa January 1871 at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire.3 She was the daughter of Thomas Ellis and Martha Ann Nicholson.1
She was recorded as living with her parents and siblings Samuel, Anne, Effie and Alexander in the 1881 census at Marmion Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 10 years old.4 Her occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.4
She was recorded as living with her parents and siblings Samuel, Anne, Alexander, Ida and Effie in the 1891 census at Church Gap Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 17 years old.5
After the death of Thomas, his widow Martha ran a lodging house and she was recorded as living with her mother, the lodging-house guests and siblings Anne, Ida and Effie in the 1901 census at 13 Alderley Road, Hoylake, Cheshire. She was recorded as being 30 years old.6
