"DONALD NICHOLSON DEAD
Former Managing Editior of The Tribune Exprires at Country Home
PLEASANT VALLEY, N.Y. April 11 - Donald Nicholson, for many years managing editor of the New York Tribune, under the editorship of the late Whitelaw Reid, died in his home here today. He was 80 years old and had been ill for nine weeks.
Mr. Nicholson was born in Hoylake, England, on June 1 1834. He was the son of a Scotch sea captain, whose influence he had to oppose to follow his preference for books instead of the sea. After struggling against odds to obtain his primary education, Mr. Nicholon graduated with honours from Christ College, Cambridge and later took up preparatory school teaching.
In1868 he came to New York and collaborated with Albert D. Richardson in writing a popular life of General U. S. Grant. Mr. Richardson was on the editorial staff of the Tribune and through him Mr. Nicholson met Whitelaw Reid, then managing editor of the paper under Horace Greeley. Mr. Nicholson then became Mr. Reid's secretary and after Mr. Reid was chosen to succeed Mr. Greeley as editor, Mr. Nicholson became managing editor. He retired on June 1st 1905.
Three children survive Mr. Nicholson."9
