Alexander Nicholson was born on 10 March 1808 at Ulverston, Lancashire.1 He was the son of Donald Nicholson and Ann Metcalf.1 Alexander Nicholson was baptised on Sunday, 10 April 1808 at Ulverston, Lancashire.1
He may have attended the wedding of his brother in the marriage of Donald Nicholson and Jane Wetherell in a Church of England ceremony at St. Michael in the Hamlet on Monday, 17 May 1824 at Aigburth, Liverpool. Jane and Donald went on to have some 12 children together, seven of whom lived to adulthood.2 Alexander Nicholson was a mariner in May 1830.3
Alexander Nicholson married Martha Davies, daughter of Thomas Davies and Martha (?), at St. Nicholas' on Saturday, 22 May 1830 at Liverpool. They were 22 and 20 respectively.3,4
He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Martha Davies (which other records indicate is his spouse) at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. He was 33 years old. Also living in the house were four of their children. Alexander wasn't home on census night.5
Although Alexander wasn't home on census night 1851, his family lived at Hoylake, Cheshire, and presumably he lived with them when he wasn't working.
He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Martha Davies as his spouse at 22 Village Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. He was 53 years old. Also living in the house were two of their two youngest children. His eight year old daughter Amy was visiting with her son Thomas' wife. Alexander wasn't actually home on census night; he was probaly working.6,7
Alexander died on 25 January 1871 at Hoylake, Cheshire, at age 62.1
