Donald Brown was born on 27 September 1829 at Scotland.1 He was the son of John Brown and Margaret Miller. As of circa 1839, Donald Brown was also known as Daniel.

At the age of 9 Donald emigrated from Liverpool on 28 February 1839 on the 'Heber' with his parents and siblings. The ship embarked with 178 emmigrants. The family was brought out by Donald McIntyre of Invermein, one of a number of private Scottish emigrant operators who had settled in Australia - he brought out 57 emigrants on the 'Heber', nearly all country people from the Highlands; shepherds and labourers and their families.2,3,4,5,6 After a voyage of nearly 6 months Donald arrived at Botany Bay, New South Wales, on 27 July 1839 with his parents and siblings. The ship's first port of call had been the Cape of Good Hope, where they embarked a further two passengers. They left the Cape on the 28th of May 1839. The trip was not without tragedy; 5 children died on the voyage.3,7,2

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Donald Nicholson and Margaret Brown in a Presbyterian ceremony at Free Presbyterian Church in Pitt Street on Friday, 19 March 1841 at Sydney. It isn't known how they met but perhaps it was through Donald's work. After their marriage Donald and Margaret lived in Parramatta at least until the start of the new year. Together they were to go on to have 10 children over 18 years.8

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of John Chalmers and Jessie Brown at St. Andrew's Scots Presbyterian Church on Monday, 7 June 1841 at Sydney. John and Jessie went on to have four known children together.9

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of John Cameron and Agnes Brown at St. Andrew's Scots Presbyterian Church on Thursday, 31 August 1848 at Sydney. John and Agnes went on to have nine known children together.10 Donald lived in August 1852 at Sydney.11

Donald and Frances Cameron Ross Brown attended the wedding of his brother Alexander Brown and Mary Ann MacKenzie at St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church in Fort Street on Tuesday, 10 August 1852 at Sydney. They also signed the marriage certificate as witnesses. Others who may have attended the wedding include Margaret Miller as mother of the groom and John Brown as father of the groom.12,13

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Robert Grigg and Frances Cameron Ross Brown at St. Andrew's Scots Presbyterian Church on Thursday, 16 November 1854 at Sydney. Robert and Frances went on to have five known children together.14

He married Charlotte Whyte, at St. Andrew's Scots Presbyterian Church on Saturday, 24 February 1855 at Sydney. And Frances Cameron Ross Brown. Others who may have attended the wedding include Margaret Miller as mother of the groom and John Brown as father of the groom. Brothers and sisters who may have attended include Margaret Brown, Jessie Brown, John Brown, Alexander Brown and Agnes Brown. Charlotte and Donald went on to have nine known children together.11 He was a ship wright in 1856.15 Donald and Charlotte lived in 1856 at the Sydney area of Balmain.15 Donald Brown was an engineer in 1863 at at St. Andrews Street in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, New South Wales.16 Donald (and presumably his spouse Charlotte) lived in 1863 at Balmain.17 Donald provided information on the death of his father John Brown, on 13 February 1863, at the Sydney suburb of Balmain at age 33.17

His father died 13 February 1863 at the approximate age of 73. Donald was aged 33 when this happened.

A newspaper carried a report in December 1867 that an un-named child of Donald was kicked by a horse, but was expected to not suffer a permanent injury.18

Donald died on 20 February 1875 at Wingham, New South Wales, at age 45.13

Two possibilities; that this entry does not relate to this Donald Brown; or his name was used to further the petition. I think the second is more likely as there is a strong liklihood that his brother Alexander lived in the same street (St. Andrews Street) and that an A. Brown of Balmain linked to a Donald Brown of Balmain through an electoral committee.).
