Donald was born on Friday, 29 May 1846 at Sydney.2 He was the son of Donald Nicholson and Margaret Brown. Donald Henry Nicholson was baptized on Wednesday, 5 August 1846 at Sydney.2

Donald presumably resided with his family in the Yass district3, and later at Limestone Creek near Forbes4, until his early teens. He lived with his parents at the NSW country town of Bowning, New South Wales, in June 1850. He lived with his parents at Yass, New South Wales, in October 1852. He lived with his parents at Limestone Creek, in the district of Yass, New South Wales, in January 1859.5

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Hugh Joseph Sutherland and Margaret Nicholson in a Wesleyan ceremony at the house of Donald Nicholson on Tuesday, 31 October 1865 at Forbes, New South Wales. Although not the oldest child, she was the first to be married - she also seems to have understated her age by as much as two years. Margaret and Hugh went on to have nine children together.6

He married Anne Smyth, daughter of William Smyth and Christina Flemming, at St. James' Church of England on Monday, 5 June 1871 at Sydney..7

He may have attended the wedding of his brother in the marriage of James Brown Nicholson and Lydia Horsnell at St. Michaels and St. Johns Catholic Cathedral on Sunday, 20 August 1871 at Bathurst, New South Wales. Lydia was ten years younger than James.. James and Lydia went on to have 12 known children together.8

His mother died 22 May 1874 at the age of 56. Donald was aged 27 when this happened.9,10

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Michael Bourke and Susannah Alletta Nicholson in a Wesleyan Methodist ceremony at her father's house on Saturday, 26 December 1874 at Parkes, New South Wales. Michael and Susannah went on to have five children over the next 10 years.11 In the mid 1870's Donald made a living as a labourer.12,13 Donald and Anne lived in February 1876 at Parkes, New South Wales.13

Donald Henry Nicholson ran a footrace against the notable runner John William Aplett in August 1874 but despite being given 8 yards he still lost. Within a few short weeks, John had married the defeated Donald Nicholson's sister.14

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of John William Aplett and Frances Nicholson in a Presbyterian ceremony on Saturday, 18 November 1876 at Forbes, New South Wales. The marriage took place at the home of Henry Clancy in Browne Street. Frances was the sister of the runner that John had recently beaten at Parkes. Frances and John went on to have about nine children together.15,16 Donald and Anne lived in April 1878 at Goodrich, New South Wales.12

His father died 3 November 1899 at the age of 87. Donald was aged 53 when this happened.
