Colin was born on Monday, 19 March 1866 at Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester.1 He was the son of Parker Nicholson and Caroline Mary Smith.

He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Jessie, Percy, Alfred and Gertrude in the 1871 census at 57 Warwick Street, Hulme, Manchester. He was recorded as being 5 years old.2

His mother died 19 February 1874 at the age of 33. Colin was aged 7 when this happened.

He was educated for 3 years at the training school ship HMS Conway at Liverpool.1,3

Colin was apprenticed at sea Wednesday, 17 August 1881.1

He was granted his certificate of competency as a Second Mate on Friday, 17 September 1886.4 He was granted his certificate of competency as a First Mate on Thursday, 6 June 1889.5 Colin became a master mariner in sail 27 May 1891.1 He was granted his certificate of competency as a Master a couple of days later on Monday, 1 June 1891.6 Colin later became employed by the Orient Line and was in the Royal Navy Reserve.1 In 1900 he took troops to the war in South Africa.1

Colin Nicholson married Winifred Anne Firminger, daughter of Benjamin Firminger and Caroline Judith Craney, on Wednesday, 15 August 1906 at Pimlico, London. They were 40 and 25 respectively.1 In from 1914 to 1918 he was Mentioned in Despatches.1

He was reputed to be the captain of the royal yacht 'Ophir', and to have designed the first America's cup yacht but neither of these claims have been substantiated - indeed, the 'Ophir' is credited with having a different captain for the Royal Tour in 1901.7

In from 1939 to 1945 he was an Air Raid Warden in Clapham, Yorkshire.1

Colin Nicholson was creditied with being the London Secretary of the Mercantile Marine Services Association and a distinguised Esperantist.1

Colin died on 9 July 1954 at Isleworth, London, at age 88.1,8
