Charles was born at 124 Gertrude Street on Monday, 22 January 1866 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.1,2 He was the son of Charles Oaten and Harriet Louisa Roberts. His common name was Fuff.3
The Oaten family moved frequently between rented houses in Fitzroy in the late 1860's and early 1870's. In January 1867 they were in a two-room brick house at 75 St. David Street, before moving on to 16 Alma Street (a three-room brick house) and then next door at number 14 - back to a two room house. Both of these houses were owned by George Butler who lived at number 20.4,5,6
On circa 1870 his younger brother George died at the approximate age of 4.
The young Oaten family moved to a four room wooden house in Victoria Parade in 1871. This house was just off the street, close to the corner of Young Street.
In 1871 they moved to Valiant Street in the neighbouring suburb of East Collingwood for a short while then to Hunter Street Collingwood. It was only when the family moved to Sackville Street in Collingwood in 1873 that they put down roots and stayed for 15 years.7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26
They initially lived in a wooden house on Sackville Street, right on the corner of Smith Street This house was rented from John Tulloch who lived next door. However, in about 1875 they moved two doors up to a house initially rented from a Miss Scott, and then from Thomas Latham, a clerk who briefly lived next door.25,24,21,17,10
It's impossible to say how Charles and Catherine first met. However, Catherine lived in Perry Street close to Albert Oaten, Charles Henry Oaten's uncle in the mid 1870's; later, their parents both moved to Sackville Street, Collingwood. He presumably lived with his parents at at 14 Sackville Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.27
His mother died 6 March 1884 at the approximate age of 36. Charles was aged 18 when this happened. She had been suffering from convulsions for a year.27
He would describe his job as a boot maker or boot finisher for the next 30 years.28,2,29,30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38 Bootmaking was not a particularly well paid job and the hours were long. In June 1902 the minimum wage for skilled members of the boot-making trade was raised to 7/6 per day or 45 shillings a week for a week of 48 hours. The award for less skilled workers was somewhat less.39
He married Catherine Carroll, a 'domestic', daughter of Peter Carroll and Margaret Dolan, in a Baptist ceremony at the Baptist Church Gore Street on Saturday, 14 March 1885 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. He was 19 and his wife Catherine was 18. However, both Charles and Kate stated their ages as 21. Apparently this marriage, to a Catholic, scandalised the family and caused Charles' father to dis-inherit his grandchildren..40 It isn't clear what Charles' religious beliefs were, but he was buried in a Roman Catholic section of Coburg Cemetery.
Some records suggest that Charles and Catherine initially lived with his recently widowed father and siblings in at Sackville Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood after their marriage but other records suggest they had rented their own place in nearby Gore Street at number 139a. However, it seems likely that the newly weds moved into a house two doors down from his family home for a short while, but then found themselves in Wellington Street, a five minute walk away.41,42,28,43,44,45,29,46,47,2
Father and son Charles and Charles were apparently significant figures with the Britannia Football Club ('The Brits'). Charles was an official and Charles was a player, as were Thomas Hamilton Battle and John Charles Battle.48
By 1888, Charles and Catherine no longer lived with his father but at an adjoining house at at 1 Sackville Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.
Charles, aged 22 and Kate Carroll, aged 21 became the parents of Albert Edward Oaten on Monday, 16 April 1888 at Collingwood.49,2
The Oaten family was apparently involved with the Brittania Football Club (the short-lived fore-runner of the Collingwood Football Club.)50
In the early 1890's, the family moved a number of times, never staying more than a year or two; to 58 Easey Street Collingwood, then Henderson Street Northcote, then back to Easey Street but this time at number 134 (a small single storey, single-fronted terrace house). By 1896 they finally came to 44 Hilton Street in Clifton Hill - also a single storey, single-fronted terrace house - where their next two children were born.51,44,52,53,54,55 Charles (and presumably his spouse Catherine) lived in December 1897 at at 105 Spensley Street in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill. This house was a wooden house, marked as 103 in the rate book for this year but likley No. 105 (as was same house renumbered in the subsequent year).33,34
The Oaten family moved house again, firstly to 84 Sackville Street, then to 35 Emma Street Collingwood.56,57,58
It has been suggested that Charles was a wife-basher and drunkard, and that this was partially responsible for what was to befall the family.59
On 23 July 1901 Charles apparently left the family home leaving Catherine and their seven children aged 2 months to 14 years.60
Six days later, Catherine took Charles to the Court of Petty Sessions on a summons and got a judgement against him, saying that:
He was ordered to pay 2/6 per week for each child, and to enter into a security for each of £10. He had 7 days to find this large amount (which amounted to more than a month's wages.)60
His wife Kate died 6 October 1901 at the age of 35, leaving him a widower at age 35.
This was to herald a difficult time for Charles. Seemingly unable to cope, his three oldest daughters were placed with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Abbotsford, and his three sons were sent to a boys home in South Melbourne, probably St. Vincents de Paul. Their youngest, Alice, was placed with a foster home but eventually became a ward of the state. She lost track of the rest of her family, not even knowing she had siblings until her mid-teens. Charles lived in 1902 at at Jackson Street in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote.61
Charles was charged on warrant for "failing to comply with an order of the Collingwood Court to pay 5s per week for the support of his child" although which child wasn't specified. He was described as being "about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, fair moustache only, medium build; wore shabby clothes; a bootmaker."62
Charles was again charged on warrant for disobeying an order of the Collingwood Bench for the payment of 5s per week for maintenace of his child in the Neglected Children's Department. He was described as "about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, fair moustache only; generally wears a dirty tweed suit". The amount of arrears was £25 17s 3d.63 On Sunday, 11 August 1907 Catherine was collected by her father.64
Charles, as the father of the groom, attended the wedding of Albert and Violet Barbara Cheyne, a confectioner, in a Congregational Church ceremony at at the manse 101 Gore Street on Wednesday, 24 November 1909 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. Albert was 21 and his wife Violet was 20. Violet needed the consent of her father to marry; both Violet and Albert had lost their mothers in their early teens. And Robert Cheyne as father of the bride. Violet and Albert went on to have four children together, three of whom lived to their adulthood.49,65 Charles and Mary lived in 1910 at at 10 Ballarat Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.66
He married Mary Louisa Gedge, daughter of William Benjamin Gedge and Jane Robinson Butcher, in 1911 at Ballarat, Victoria..67
His father died 29 April 1914 at the age of 70. Charles was aged 48 when this happened. He was a dealer in 1916.68 Charles and Mary lived in 1916 at at 60 Flinders Street in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote.68
On 2 May 1919 his son Albert died at the age of 31 at the approximate age of 31 during the Spanish Flu epidemic. Charles Henry Oaten lived with his son Charles and wife Ida in 1926 at at Bundoora Road in the Melbourne suburb of Cheltenham.69
Mary may have separated from Charles as they seemed to live in separate houses thereafter.70,71,72 Charles lived in 1931 at at Carroll Street in the Melbourne suburb of Preston.73 He lived with his daughter Margaret and her husband George Norwood in 1934 at at 99 Henty Street in the Melbourne suburb of Preston. His wife was living elsewhere.74
He may have attended the wedding of his grand-daughter in the marriage of Hubert Nicholson and Mavis Lily Oaten in a Church of England ceremony at All Saints on Saturday, 17 February 1934 at the Melbourne suburb of Kooyong. Mavis married with the consent of her mother. They went on to have some eight children together, only two of whom reached adulthood.75,76 Charles lived in 1936 at 15 Kelshy Street, in Preston. This was was likely his residence, although it is not certain.37 He lived with his daughter Margaret and her husband George Norwood in 1939 at Preston. His wife was living elsewhere.77 Charles Henry Oaten was retired in 1946.78
Charles died on 12 April 1951 at at 99 Henty Street in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir at age 85 of myocarditis, arteriosclerosis and senility. A doctor saw him the day he died..79,80,81 His body was interred at Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery on 16 April 1951 at the Melbourne suburb of Coburg. He is buried in the Roman Catholic section, plot CO-RC*D***424, and is buried with his daughter Catherine and her husband..82,83
