John Nicholson may have been born circa 1815 at Inverness-shire, Scotland.2 He may have been born circa 1817 at Lochinver, the parish of Assynt, Sutherland, Scotland.1,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Donald Nicholson and Mary Margaret MacDougall.1

John Nicholson married Elizabeth Jenkins, daughter of James Jenkins and Isabella Edwards, circa 1838. John Nicholson was a labourer in June 1841.7

He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Elizabeth Jenkins (which other records indicate is his spouse) at Dalguburn Works, Cardross, Dunbartonshire. His age was listed as 20. Also in the house was their young son, as well as five young adults.7 John Nicholson was a lamp-lighter in 1847.8,9 John (and presumably his spouse Elizabeth) lived in May 1847 at Woodland Road, Glasgow.8 John Nicholson was a city lamp lighter in March 1851.10

He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census with Elizabeth Jenkins as his spouse at Browns Lane, Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. Also living in the house were 4 of his children.10

He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Elizabeth Jenkins as his spouse at Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. Also in the house were 4 of their children.11 John Nicholson was a public lamplighter in April 1861.11 He was a lamplighter in April 1871.2

He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Elizabeth Jenkins as his spouse at 5 South Woodside Road, Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. Also living in the house were 3 of their children.2

John was listed as living with his daughter Mary, her husband Roderick McKenzie, a boarder and two of his young grandchildren in the 1881 census at 294 South York Street, Govan, Hutchesontown, Lanarkshire.12 John Nicholson was a window cleaner in 1884.1 John lived in March 1884 at 49 McIntyre Street, in Glasgow.1

John died on 10 March 1884 at 6 Claremont Gardens, in Glasgow, of a fractured skull at 9:20am.1
