John was born on Saturday, 1 May 1847 at Barony, Glasgow.2,3,4 He was the son of John Nicholson and Elizabeth Jenkins.1
He was recorded as living with her parents and siblings Donald, Isabella and Ann in the 1851 census at Browns Lane, Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. He was recorded as being 4 years old.4
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Donald, Elizabeth and Mary in the 1861 census at Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. He was recorded as being 14 years old.5 John Nicholson was an apprentice plumber in April 1861.5
He was recorded as living with his parents and younger sisters Elizabeth and Mary in the 1871 census at 5 South Woodside Road, Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. He was recorded as being 24 years old.3 John Nicholson was a plumber in April 1871.3 John lived in February 1876 at 18 West End Park Street, in Glasgow.6
He married Marion Ritchie, daughter of a mason, in a Church of Scotland ceremony on Friday, 25 February 1876 at Glasgow.. John and Marion both gave the same address as their place of residence.6 John lived in January 1878 at 44 Richard Street, Glasgow.7 He witnessed his mother Elizabeth Jenkins's death on 20 January 1878 at Glasgow.7 John lived in March 1884 at 19 Mount Street, in Glasgow.1 John provided information on the death of his father John Nicholson, on 10 March 1884, at 6 Claremont Gardens, in Glasgow, at age 36.1
