Donald Nicholson was born circa 1840.1 He was the son of John Nicholson and Elizabeth Jenkins.1 Donald Nicholson may have been born circa 1843 at Haddingtonshire, East Lothian.3 He may have been born circa 1843 at Leven, Dunbartonshire.4 He presumably lived with his parents at Woodland Road, Glasgow, in May 1847.1
He was recorded as living with his parents and younger siblings Isabella, John and Ann in the 1851 census at Browns Lane, Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. He was recorded as being 8 years old.3
He was recorded as living with his parents and younger siblings John, Elizabeth and Mary in the 1861 census at Barony, Milton, Lanarkshire. He was recorded as being 18 years old.4 Donald Nicholson was a blacksmith in April 1861.4
