He was recorded as living with his parents and brothers John, Malcolm in the 1881 census at 8 Virginia Street, Bootle, Liverpool. He was recorded as being 5 years old.1 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.1
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings John, Malcolm, William, Thomas, Margaret and Arthur in the 1891 census at 231 Marsh Lane, Bootle, Liverpool. He was recorded as being 15 years old.2 His occupation was recorded as being a clerk in the census.3
He was recorded as living with his parents and younger siblings Thomas, Margaret and Arthur in the 1901 census at Bootle, Liverpool. He was recorded as being 25 years old.4 His occupation was recorded as being a mercantile clerk in the census.4
