Samuel John Westbrook was born on 29 November 1832 at Hobart.1,2 He was the son of Dr. Samuel Westbrook and Mary Margaret Mason.1 He presumably moved with his parents to Clifton House, in New Norfolk, Tasmania, on 17 February 1835.3 Samuel John Westbrook may have been baptised on Thursday, 29 September 1836.4,1
He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Rev. Samuel Berjew Fookes and Margaret Sarah Westbrook in a Church of England ceremony at St. John the Baptist on Saturday, 20 February 1847 at Buckland, Tasmania. Samuel and Margaret went on to have four children together, two of whom lived into their adulthood.5,6,7 Samuel John Westbrook was a mariner.1 He was a lighthouse keeper.4
He married Jane Sangwell, at the house of Thomas Drury at Steam Packet Tavern on Monday, 12 May 1862 at Hobart. He was 29 and his wife Jane was 16..1
His father died 2 March 1866 at the age of 70. Samuel was aged 33 when this happened.
Samuel died on 18 May 1877 at Alfred Hospital, in Melbourne, at age 44 of typhoid fever. His death notice said: 'on the 18th May, at the Alfred Hospital, of typhoid fever, Samuel John son of late Dr Westbrook, of Tasmania, Tasmanian papers please copy.1,8,2'
