Henry was born on Monday, 13 May 1839 at St. Georges, London.1,2,3 He was the son of John Oaten and Charlotte Amelia Pellett. Henry William Oaten may have been baptised at St. Marylebone on Saturday, 8 May 1841 at London.4
He was recorded as living with his parents and older brother John in the 1841 census at Curzon Street, Hanover Square, London. He was recorded as being just 2 years old..5 He presumably lived with his parents at Newland Street, in Belgrave, London, circa 1842.6 He presumably lived with his parents at 10 Caroline Street, Eaton Square, London, circa 1846.7,6 He presumably lived with his parents at Petersham, Surrey, circa 1848.6
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Amelia, John, Charles, Albert and Frederick in the 1851 census at 13 Jubilee Place, Chelsea, London. He was recorded as being 11 years old.1,8 Henry William Oaten was a scholar.1 He presumably lived with his parents at Kings Parade, in Chelsea, London, in September 1853.9
At the age of 14 Henry emigrated from London on 30 December 1853 on the the barque 'Luconia' with his parents and siblings.10,11 Henry arrived at Melbourne on 12 June 1854 with his parents and siblings.12,11
He presumably lived with his parents at the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood in June 1855.13 He presumably lived with his parents at at 17 King William Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1858. They had moved from this address by 1861.14,15 He presumably lived with his parents at at 38 Oxford Street in the Melbourne suburb of East Collingwood in 1862.16
His mother died 12 July 1862 at the approximate age of 58. Henry was aged 23 when this happened. He was employed by Broadbent Brothers and Company, general carriers, as was his brother Charles.17 He presumably lived with his parents at at 46 Oxford Street in the Melbourne suburb of East Collingwood in 1863.18
He married Helen Messinger Wallis, in 1863.19
Part of his job was to do financial audits. On one occasion he went to Geelong to audit the books (and was called as a witness when an embezzlement trial proceeded.)20
He may have attended the wedding of his brother in the marriage of Charles Oaten and Harriet Louisa Roberts a civil service at the Registry Office on Saturday, 25 February 1865 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. Harriet had to get prior permission from a JP due to her age. It's not clear why they chose a civil service over a religious one. Harriet and Charles went on to have six children together, three of whom lived into their adulthood.21 He presumably lived with his parents at at 75 Smith Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1866.22 He presumably lived with his parents at at 23 Stanley Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood in April 1866.23
His father died 11 April 1866 at the approximate age of 64. Henry was aged 26 when this happened. Henry (and presumably his spouse Helen) lived in 1870 at at Cliff Street in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran.24 Henry (and presumably his spouse Helen) lived in 1872 at at 56 Moray Place in the Melbourne suburb of Emerald Hill.25 Henry (and presumably his spouse Helen) lived in 1873 at at 43 Eastern Road in the Melbourne suburb of Emerald Hill.26 Henry (and presumably his spouse Helen) lived in 1877 at at 5 Great Davis Street in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra.27 Henry (and presumably his spouse Helen) lived in 1890 at at Myamyn Street in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern.28
His wife Helen died 3 May 1892, leaving him a widower at age 52. Henry continued to place a memorial in the newspaper on the anniversary of her death for many years.29 Henry William Oaten was employed by Broadbent Brothers and Company. in 1895 at 504 Little Flinders Street, in Melbourne.30 He was employed by Broadbent Brothers and Company. in 1896 at 44 King Street, in Melbourne.31
On 27 April 1898 he was a pallbearer for a funeral of a fellow employee at Ballarat Old Cemetery, in Ballarat, Victoria.32 Henry lived in January 1901 at at 'Eurobin' Myamym Street in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern.33,34
On 22 September 1911 Henry at the age of 72 was elected as vice-president of the Broadbent Brothers and Company Mutual Benefit Society, and his nephew Albert was elected to the committee.35 Henry William Oaten was the senior partner of Broadbent Brothers and Company, general carriers, and had been associated with them for 50 years. in August 1912.17
Henry died on 12 August 1912 at Malvern at age 73.36,37,38 His body was interred at St. Kilda cemetery in August 1912 at the Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda. Church of England, Compartment B, Grave 0262.
A newspaper reported that when he died his estate was worth £11,916 (including real estate worth £2113) which was distributed to family and charity.3940
At age 76 he made a will on 24 May 1915. His will made further distributions to charities, including hospitals and children's homes totalling about £100. (an unknown value.)40
