Frederick Edmund Oaten was born on 25 September 1848 at Petersham, Surrey.1,2,3 He was the son of John Oaten and Charlotte Amelia Pellett.
He was recorded as living with his parents and older siblings John, Henry, Charles, Albert and Amelia in the 1851 census at 13 Jubilee Place, Chelsea, London. He was recorded as being 2 years old.4,5 He presumably lived with his parents at Kings Parade, in Chelsea, London, in September 1853.2 Frederick Edmund Oaten was baptised on Sunday, 4 September 1853 at Petersham, Surrey.6,2
At the age of 5 Frederick emigrated from London on 30 December 1853 on the the barque 'Luconia' with his parents and siblings.7,8 Frederick arrived at Melbourne on 12 June 1854 with his parents and siblings.9,8
He presumably lived with his parents at the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood in June 1855.10 He presumably lived with his parents at at 17 King William Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1858. They had moved from this address by 1861.11,12 He presumably lived with his parents at at 38 Oxford Street in the Melbourne suburb of East Collingwood in 1862.13
His mother died 12 July 1862 at the approximate age of 58. Frederick was aged 13 when this happened. He presumably lived with his parents at at 46 Oxford Street in the Melbourne suburb of East Collingwood in 1863.14
He may have attended the wedding of his brother in the marriage of Charles Oaten and Harriet Louisa Roberts a civil service at the Registry Office on Saturday, 25 February 1865 at the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. Harriet had to get prior permission from a JP due to her age. It's not clear why they chose a civil service over a religious one. Harriet and Charles went on to have six children together, three of whom lived into their adulthood.15 He presumably lived with his parents at at 75 Smith Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1866.16 He presumably lived with his parents at at 23 Stanley Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood in April 1866.17
His father died 11 April 1866 at the approximate age of 64. Frederick was aged 17 when this happened.
Frederick emigrated from Australia in 1867.18
Frederick emigrated from Otago, New Zealand, in 1867.18 He was a labourer in 1879.18
Frederick died on 30 November 1879 at Dunedin Hospital, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, at age 31 of tuberculosis.19,18,20 His body was interred circa 1 December 1879 at Otago.3 He was unmarried on 1 December 1879.18
