Charles John Battle was born on 23 May 1857 at Launceston, Tasmania.2,1 He was the son of John Charles Battle and Lucy Young.1 Charles John Battle was baptised on Wednesday, 24 June 1857 at Tasmania.1 He presumably lived with his parents at at Young Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in March 1860.3 He presumably lived with his parents at at Hanover Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in January 1867.4

Charles John Battle married Mary Taylor in 1881 at Victoria.5 Charles John Battle was a bootmaker in 1882.6 Charles (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived in November 1882 at at 143 Johnston Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. This was a wooden house of 4 rooms.6 Charles John Battle was a bootfinisher in 1884.7 Charles (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived in November 1884 at at 135 Gore Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.7 Charles John Battle was a boot finisher in 1886.8 Charles (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived in November 1886 at at Easey Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.8 Charles (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived in January 1891 at Collingwood. Although the house number isn't specified, the house owner is the same as when they lived at number 135.9 Charles John Battle was a bootmaker in January 1891.9 Charles (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived in 1896 at at 135 Easey Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. This was a wooden house.10 Charles John Battle was a bootmaker in 1896.10 He was a bootmaker in 1900.11

A family legend has it that Albert Edward Oaten was born Church of England, but was brought up Methodist by the Battle family (his first cousins, once removed). This is likely to have been either Charles John Battle (with his teeming family) or Thomas Hamilton Battle who had no children - both lived on Easey Street for long periods around the turn of the century.12 Charles John Battle was a bootmaker in 1912.13 Charles and Mary lived in 1912 at at 137 Easey Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.13 Charles John Battle was a bootmaker in 1914.14 Charles (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived in November 1916 at Collingwood.15

It was reported to family that Thomas Hamilton Battle had been wounded; it was six long weeks later that they found out that the wounds were serious.16

On 8 July 1928 his brother Thomas died at the age of 68.17 Charles and Mary lived in August 1938 at at 19 Gardenvale Road in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield.18

Charles died on 12 April 1954 at Broadford, Victoria, at age 96.1 His body was interred at Booroondara General Cemetery on 14 April 1954 at the Melbourne suburb of Kew. He shares a headstone with his wife and daughter Lucy - they are buried in Plot BAPT D 0064.19
