J. M. Nicholson was born circa 1894 at Hoylake, Cheshire.1 He was the son of Alexander Peter Nicholson and Martha Elizabeth Rowland.1
He was recorded as living with his mother (his father was probably away fishing), a lodger and his siblings, M., Dorothy and Henry in the 1901 census at 11 Marmion Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. He was recorded as being 7 years old.1
