Joseph Springham was born circa 1879 at Stanstead Abbots, Hertfordshire.2 He was the son of Joseph Springham and Annie Louisa Darby.1 Joseph Springham was baptised at St. James' on Sunday, 31 August 1879 at Stanstead Abbots, Hertfordshire.1
He was recorded as living with his parents, his aunt Sarah (who was recorded as being their servant) and sisters, Edith and Cecilia in the 1891 census at 21 Roydon Road, Stanstead Abbots, Hertfordshire. He was recorded as being 11 years old.3 His occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.3
He was recorded as living with his parents and his sister and Cecilia in the 1901 census at Roydon Road, Stanstead Abbots, Hertfordshire. He was recorded as being 21 years old. His aunt Sarah - his mother's sister - also lived with them.4 His occupation was recorded as being a local merchant in the census. He was helping his father run a shop from their home.4
