Elizabeth Hawthorne was also known as Elizebeth Hawthorne.1,4 She may have been born circa 1816 at Ireland.3 She was likely born in 1819 at Ireland.4 She was the daughter of David Hawthorn and Sarah (?)2

She married James McCheyne, son of Ann (?), circa 1840.1

The working class was looked down upon by the contemporary ministers of religion, seeing:
the most mournful signs of moral deterioration - infidelity shedding its baleful influence over the minds and habits of the poor; intemperence laying waste to their bodily frame, and destroying the peace of their families, and both together inducing a habitual disregard for the sabbath day, and a sullen contempt of the house of God, and the solemn obligations of Christianity.5

The poulation of Greenock was estimated to be about 29,000 in 1835, of which it was thought two thirds were from the poor or working classes. Crimes such as assult was rare, but "theft and house-breaking, and depradations on property of various kinds, are often practiced with impunity."6

Elizabeth Hawthorne was recorded as living with James McCheyne in the 1841 census at McMillans Land, Cartsdyke, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and other records indicate this was her spouse. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; her approximate age was recorded as 20. Also living in the house were their young daughter Sarah, someone thought to be her mother-in-law and perhaps her brother (as well as two boarders)..7

She was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census at Broad Close, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Broad Close was an old street in the centre of Greenock, later demolished. Her age was recorded as 35 years old. Also living in the house was her four children and her mother-in-law.8 Her occupation was recorded as being 'husband at sea' in the census.8

On Sunday, 20 November 1853 a Mary McKechnie stole some clothes from James and was sentenced to prison for 5 years. This was not the last problem this family was to have with Mary.9

She was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census at 37 The Vennel, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The Vennel was an old Glasgow main street, later demolished. 4 Her age was recorded as being 44 years old. Also living in the house was her daughter Margaret.10

Her husband James died between 1852 and 1861, leaving her a widow.

Elizabeth, along with 2 other women was assaulted by Philip Quogh near 37 Vennel, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on 15 August 1863:
Infuriated Blackguard. —Philip Qaogh, labourer, a low-browed fellow was charged with assaulting Ann Campbell or M’Diarmid, Mary Ann M’Diarmid, and Elizabeth Hawthorne or M‘Shane. in close 35 Vennel on Saturday night. He said be did not remember of it. The girl M'Diarmid was standing the closemouth with McShane when Quogh came and put his arm round her waist and called her an offensive name. They ran up the Cose from him, but he followed, and catching hold of M'Diarmid tore her hair and struck her on the face. Her cries brought her mother, who relieved her daughter from ill-usage. He then devoted his attention to her, and used her in the same way. They both managed to escape, and then he operated in a like manner on M'Shane. He was fined in 21s or go 30 days to jail.11

She was charged with selling excisable liquors from home without a license. She plead not guilty but was sentanced to £7 and 31s costs, or 6 weeks jail. Given the steep cost, it's likely she went to jail.12 Elizabeth lived on 20 August 1865 at 36 The Vennel, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.12

Her son Robert got in trouble with the law again and faced the Police Court on 30 January 1866:
Robert M‘Shane, 14 years of age, and Robert Docherty, 12 years of age, were charged with the theft of vest and a bible, the property of Henry Hamilton Hunt, from board the barque Orange Grove, Saturday last. Both pled guilty, and stated that they went down into the forecastle of the vessel to see if they could get some tobacco but, seeing a chest open, they took the articles. Both bad been previously convicted of theft, and Docherty’s father said he was perfectly agreeable that the son, who was out his control, should sent to the reformatory. Both boys were then sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, and thereafter to 3 years in the Reformatory School.13,14

Elizabeth was charged with 'resetting' and imprisoned on 30 January 1866:
Resetting Property Stolen by a Son.— Elizabeth Hawthorne or M‘Shane was charged with the reset of a vest and bible, in the house occupied by her in the Vennel, on Saturday, which articles had been stolen by Robert M'Shane (her son) and Robert Docherty from the barque Orange Grove, she well knowing that the said articles were stolen. Panel pled not guilty. From the evidence led it was shown that the boy M' Shane had taken the articles to his mother. When charged with the reset of the articles, she gave up the bible, but denied all knowledge of the vest. When being about to be locked up she told that she had hid it in ashpit, where it was found torn all to pieces She was found guilty, and sentenced to be imprisoned for 20 days.13,14

If the sentence was carried out, then Robert was in custody until mid February, and then in the reform school until Feb 1869.13 Elizabeth lived in May 1866 at Greenock, Renfrewshire.15

Elizabeth was charged with selling liquor on 16 May 1866:
POLICE COURT-YESTERDAY (Before Bailie Grey.) The Court . which was adjourned about one o'clock, sat again at three o’clock, when the following cases were disposed of.
VENNEL SHEBEEN. Elizabeth Hawthorne or M'Shane, widow, residing at 36 Vennel pled guilty to charge of trafficking in excisable liquors without a license, on Sunday last, in the house occupied her, such being the second offence. Panel was sentenced to pay the statutory penalty of £15 with 24s costs; failing payment, three months’ imprisonment imprisonment.

Unable or unwilling to pay, she went to prison for 3 months.15,16

An undelivered overseas letter was sent to her at 35 Vennel, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, in December 1867.17

She was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census at 23 Oswald Street (now Heron Street), Calton, Bridgeton, Lanarkshire.18

Elizabeth died on 5 March 1885 at 30 Bridge Street, Glasgow, of sub-acute peritonitis.2
