Joseph was born on Monday, 12 August 1844 at Stanley, Tasmania.2 He may have been born in 1846 at Launceston, Tasmania.1

Joseph Birmingham Alford married Louisa Ann Garlick Berjew, daughter of John Berjew and Catherine Jane Iles Fooks, at the Presbyterian Manse on Saturday, 21 June 1873 at the Melbourne suburb of Richmond. They were 28 and 24 respectively.3,2,4

Joseph died on 1 October 1907 at the Melbourne suburb of South Melbourne at age 63.5,1
