Hector was born in 1874 at Forbes, New South Wales.2 He was the son of Hugh Joseph Sutherland and Margaret Nicholson. He presumably moved with his parents to Cobar, New South Wales, circa 1880.3
His mother died 10 August 1883.4
He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Henry Cyril Rogers and Alexandra Sutherland in a Wesleyan ceremony at the residence of Hugh Sutherland on Thursday, 16 March 1893 at Cornish Town, Cobar, New South Wales. Alexandra and Henry went on to have five known children together.5
He married Henrietta Jane Murphy, in 1901 at Dubbo, New South Wales..6 He lived with his father at at 106 Mitchell Street in the Sydney suburb of Glebe in 1903.7 Hector Joseph Sutherland was the Mayor of Cobar in 1914 at Cobar, New South Wales.8
He married Mary Selina Stanford, in 1915 at the Sydney suburb of Balmain South..8
Hector died on 4 April 1955 at at 175 Lawson Street in the Newcastle suburb of Hamilton, New South Wales.9,10
