Flora Jane Nicholson was born circa 1827 at Kilmuir, Inverness-shire, Scotland.1 She was the daughter of James Nicholson and Margaret McDonald.1 As of March 1841, Flora Jane Nicholson was also known as Flora Nicolson.3,4
She was recorded as living with her parents, a visitor (perhaps her grandfather) and siblings Samuel, William, Charles, Mary, Margaret and Isabella in the 1841 census at Duntulm, Kilmuir, Inverness-shire, Scotland. She was recorded as being 13 years old.3
Her mother died before March 1851.
She was recorded as living with her father, a visitor (perhaps her grandfather) and siblings, Charles, Mary and Isabella in the 1851 census at Duntulm, Kilmuir, Inverness-shire, Scotland. She was recorded as being 25 years old.4
Flora Jane Nicholson married John Ross on Thursday, 14 July 1853 at Kilmuir, Inverness-shire.5
Flora and her husband John emigrated from Liverpool on 23 August 1853 on the 'New Zealander'. This was little more than 5 weeks after their marriage.6 Flora and her husband John arrived at Portland, Victoria, on 30 November 1853. Along the way, their son Hugh was born. The 'New Zealander' was destroyed by fire less than a month later in Portland, where it was suspected that the crew scuttled the ship to join the gold rush..6,7
Her father died 4 September 1866 at the approximate age of 70.
Flora died on 24 June 1913 at Watchem, Victoria.1,8 Her body was interred at Watchem Cemetery at Watchem, Victoria. She is buried in the same plot as her husband and their son Samuel..5
