John MacKay was born on 15 August 1841 at the Parish of Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland.2,1 He was the son of Donald MacKay and Margaret Nicholson.1
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Donald, Merran, Williamina, James and Hector in the 1851 census at Kinauld, the Parish of Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland. He was recorded as being 10 years old. His nephew Duncan Ross was also recorded in the house.3 John MacKay was a blacksmith's son in April 1861.4
He was recorded as living with his parents and younger brother James in the 1861 census at Kinauld, the Parish of Dornoch, Sutherland. He was recorded as being 19 years old. Also in the house was his 8 year old niece Catherine Bannerman.4
He was recorded as living with his widowed father and his 17 year old neice, Catherine Bannerman in the 1871 census at Garvault, Parish of Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland. He was recorded as being 27 years old. He was recorded as living with his 27 year old son, John, also a blacksmith, and his granddaughter Catherine Bannerman.5 He witnessed Donald MacKay's death on 26 September 1876 at Culdrain, Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland.6
