Donald was born on Saturday, 21 March 1829 at the Parish of Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland.2,3 He was the son of Donald MacKay and Margaret Nicholson.1
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Christina, Mary, Merran, George and Williamina in the 1841 census at Kinauld, the Parish of Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland. He was recorded as being 12 years old.4 Donald MacKay was an apprentice in March 1851.5
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings Merran, Williamina, John, James and Hector in the 1851 census at Kinauld, the Parish of Dornoch, Sutherland. He was recorded as being 22 years old. His nephew Duncan Ross was also recorded in the house.5 Donald provided information on the death of his mother Margaret Nicholson, on 20 December 1869, at Garvault, Parish of Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland, at age 40.6
Donald died after 20 December 1869.1
