James was born on Sunday, 23 April 1758 at Lingwood, Norfolk.2 He was the son of John Manthorpe and Hannah Buddrey.2 James lived in July 1781 at Acle, Norfolk.3
He married Elizabeth Allen, daughter of Robert Allen and Sarah Johnson, on Thursday, 12 July 1781 at Acle, Norfolk. When he signed his marriage certificate, James was illiterate, but Elizabeth signed her name.. They went on to have 10 children over the next 18 years.2
His mother died 9 April 1786 at the approximate age of 77. James was aged 27 when this happened.
His father died 16 May 1786 at the approximate age of 70. James was aged 28 when this happened.
James, aged 29 and Elizabeth Allen became the parents of William Manthorpe on Sunday, 27 May 1787 at Acle, Norfolk.4,5
In 1798 he leased some land from Thomas Shingles for 1 pound and 12 shillings at Acle, Norfolk.6
James, as the father of the groom, along with Elizabeth may have attended the wedding of William and Hannah Read in a Church of England ceremony on Sunday, 1 March 1807 at Herringfleet, Suffolk. William was 19 and his wife Hannah was 19. They were married by Banns *which were read on the 8th of Feburary, the 22nd of Februay and early March ;William signed with a mark and Hannah signed with her name. Others who may have attended include and John Read as father of the bride. Hannah and William went on to have some eleven children together.7,8
James died on 24 March 1840 at Mutford, Suffolk, at age 81.9,2
