Her baptism name was Lidia.4 Lydia was born.5,1 She was baptised on Sunday, 11 May 1817 at Herringfleet, Suffolk.5,4 She was the daughter of William Manthorpe and Hannah Read.3 Lydia lived in January 1838 at the village of Gorleston-on-Sea near the town of Great Yarmouth, Suffolk.6

She married James George Smith, a plumber and glazier, son of John Smith and (?) (?), in a Church of England ceremony on Monday, 8 January 1838 at Gorleston-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, Suffolk. She was 20 and her husband James was 20..7,1,8,6

Lydia Manthorpe was recorded as living with James George Smith in the 1841 census at Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and other records indicate this was her spouse. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; her approximate age was recorded as 20 years old. Also living in the house were their two young children.9

Lydia Manthorpe was recorded as the spouse of James George Smith in the 1851 census at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She was recorded as being 34 years old. Also living in the house were six of their children aged 13 to three years old.10

Lydia, aged 34 and James George Smith, aged 33 may have become the parents of Walter Thomas Smith on Friday, 16 May 1851 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.11,12,13

Lydia Manthorpe was recorded as the spouse of James George Smith in the 1861 census at 33 Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She was recorded as being 43 years of age. Also in the household were 8 of their sons aged from 22 years to 12 months.1 Lydia lived in 1871 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.17,16

Lydia Manthorpe was recorded as the spouse of James George Smith in the 1871 census at 6 Northumberland Close, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She was recorded as being 53 years old. Also living in the house were four of her children aged 6 to 15.18

Her mother died 13 August 1872 at the age of 85 at the approximate age of 86. Lydia was aged 55 when this happened.

Her father died June 1873 at the age of 86. Lydia was aged 56 when this happened. Lydia lived on 18 November 1875 at 28 Northumberland Place, Yarmouth, Norfolk.16

Lydia Manthorpe was recorded as the spouse of James George Smith in the 1881 census at 28 St. Nicholas Parade, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She was recorded as being 63 years old..19

Lydia Manthorpe was recorded as the spouse of James George Smith in the 1891 census at 69 Nelson Road North, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She was recorded as being 74 years old.. Also in the house was their youngest daughter, her husband and a visitor.20

Late in life James and Lydia had a photo taken together.

Lydia lived in 1901 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.21,16

She was recorded as living with her daughter and her son-in-law in the 1901 census at 23 South Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She was recorded as being 83 years old.22

Lydia died at Audley Street, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.23,2 Her body was interred on 16 February 1911 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.23
