Eliza Maria Watson was born on 21 May 1845 at Pennington Terrace, in North Adelaide.2,4 She was the daughter of Henry Watson and Charlotte Eliza Float.1,2
She may have attended the wedding of her sister in the marriage of John Darby and Edith Watson at the residence of George Wright on Saturday, 12 October 1878 at the Adelaide suburb of Woodville. Edith and John went on to have nine known children together.5
Eliza Maria Watson married Jim Darby, son of John D. Darby and Mary Leonard, at Christ Church on Tuesday, 31 August 1880 at North Adelaide. They were 35 and 29 respectively.1,6 A photograph was taken circa 1885. James became a committee member of the Handorf branch of the Liberal Union and Eliza was elected to the committee of the women's branch.7,8,9 The Handorf branch of the Liberal Union held a social 17 August 1911 and the Darbys contributed to the programme.10
Eliza Maria Watson and Jim Darby a fire swept through their property and destroyed about 60 hives of bees in February 1912 at Handorf, South Australia.11 She was involved in organising a social for the local branch of the Liberal Union.12 Eliza Maria Watson and Jim Darby contributed a number of times to Patriotic Funds in aid of the soldier's wellbeing at this time in 1915.13,14,15
Eliza died on 19 June 1932 at "Glen Ellen", in Ambleside, South Australia, at age 87.16,17
