Joseph was born in 1807 at Taunton, Somerset.1 He was the son of John Oaten and Hannah Tamsey. Joseph Oaten may have been baptised at St. George's Hanover Square on Sunday, 25 March 1810 at London.2 He presumably moved with his parents to London circa 1811. It isn't clear what prompted the move.3

He married Catherine Clarke, daughter of Francis Clarke and Ann (?), at St. Marylebone in 1831 at London..4 Joseph (and presumably his spouse Catherine) lived in October 1832 at Princes Street, in London.5 Joseph Oaten was a coal merchant.6,7 Joseph lived in 1840 at 12 Paddington Wharf, Paddington, London.7

On Thursday, 28 May 1840 he was initiated into the Confidence Lodge of the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons, and was a member until 1844.7

On 18 April 1842 Stephen Finney and Joseph Oaten dissolved their partnership as coal merchants trading as 'Oaten and Finney.6'

Joseph died before April 1871.8
