Stephen Finney was born in 1800 at Birmingham.1

He married Harriet Oaten, daughter of John Oaten and Hannah Tamsey, at St. George's on Saturday, 21 August 1830 at Hanover Square, London..2,1 Stephen Finney was a coal merchant.3

On 18 April 1842 Stephen Finney and Joseph Oaten dissolved their partnership as coal merchants trading as 'Oaten and Finney.3'

He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census at Paddington, London.4 His occupation was recorded as being a coal merchant in the census.4

He was recorded as head of household in the 1881 census at 34 Cambridge Square, Paddington, London. He was living with his daughters Harriet and Mary, as well as three servants.5 Stephen Finney was a retired coal merchant on 3 April 1881.5
