John was born on Tuesday, 28 January 1879 at Hobart.2 He was the son of William Reid and Mary Jane Fookes. He presumably lived with his parents at Deloraine, Tasmania, in 1883.3

John Barclay Reid married Miriam Fairbrother at St. George's Anglican Church on Saturday, 23 May 1903 at Battery Point, Tasmania.2 John Barclay Reid was a public servant.2

John died on 1 January 1956 at the Melbourne suburb of Elsternwick at age 76.2 His body was cremated at Springvale Botanical Crematorium on 4 January 1956 at the Melbourne suburb of Springvale.2
