Hugh was born on Friday, 10 August 1883 at Cobar, New South Wales. His mother died giving birth to him..1 He was the son of Hugh Joseph Sutherland and Margaret Nicholson.
He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Henry Cyril Rogers and Alexandra Sutherland in a Wesleyan ceremony at the residence of Hugh Sutherland on Thursday, 16 March 1893 at Cornish Town, Cobar, New South Wales. Alexandra and Henry went on to have five known children together.2 As of 1900, Hugh Henry Sutherland was also known as George Samuels.3 On circa August 1903 he got in trouble with the police and was charged, along with 2 others, with stealing the coat, trousers and vest of a man [at L] but a witness said that 'his father occupied a high position in Cobar' and the jury subsequently returned a verdict of 'not guilty'.3
He married Florence May Hemsley, daughter of Martha Hemsley, on Saturday, 15 February 1908 at Cobar, New South Wales. There is some suggestion that the wedding was paid for by a Mr. Pike who may have been Florence's father..4,5
In 1926 he was a NSW organiser of the Federated Engine-drivers and Fireman's Association.6 Hugh was a Flying Officer with the 2nd Operational Training Unit in the Second World War.7 He was awarded the Distinguised Flying Medal.7
Hugh died on 15 May 1952 at Main Road, in Toukley, New South Wales, at age 68.8 He was buried on 17 May 1952 at Newcastle Crematorium, in Newcastle, New South Wales.9
