Hugh was born on Wednesday, 2 September 1908 at Cobar, New South Wales.1,2 He was the son of Hugh Henry Sutherland and Florence May Hemsley.
He married Jean Agness Rankine, at Christ Church Cathedral circa 7 September 1934 at Newcastle, New South Wales..3,4 Hugh was a private with the the 5th Volunteer Defence Corps (part-time) in the Second World War.2 Hugh and Jean lived circa 1950 at Stanley Street, Hamilton South, New South Wales.5
Hugh died on 3 November 1988 at at Home For The Aged in the Newcastle suburb of Dudley, New South Wales, at age 80. He had only been resident there for a short time, previously having been at The Junction, NSW.5 He was buried on 5 November 1988 at Newcastle Crematorium, in Newcastle, New South Wales.2
