James Hampson may have been born in 1831 at Lancashire.2 He was the son of Thomas Hampson and Tomason Horrocks.1 James Hampson was baptised on Sunday, 30 December 1832 at Manchester.1
He was recorded as living with his parents and siblings George and Ann in the 1841 census at at Club Roiw in the village of Turton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire. He was recorded as being 10 years old (although this was apparently rounded).2
He was recorded in the 1851 census as living with his grandmother at at 30 Blackburn Road in the village of Turton near the town of Bolton, Lancashire. She was recorded as being 70 years old and living with her grandson.3 His occupation was recorded as being a 'cut looker / cotton pieces' in the census.3 James Hampson was a bookkeeper in 1859.4
The will of his father Thomas Hampson, in which James was named sole heir was proved on 17 February 1859 The estate was valued at less than 50 pounds.4 James lived in March 1859 at 72 Tipping Street, in Ardwick, Manchester.5
