Ronald McDonald was born circa 1785 at Islay, Argyle, Scotland.1

Ronald McDonald was recorded as a boarder in the household of William Hawthorn and Margaret McLachlan in the 1851 census at 61 New Wynd, St. Mary, Glasgow. He was recorded as being 43 years old. Also living in the house were three of his daughters and a boarder.1 His occupation was recorded as being a causier in the census.1
