William was born on Sunday, 27 May 1787 at Acle, Norfolk.3,4 He was the son of James Manthorpe and Elizabeth Allen.2 William Manthorpe was baptised on Sunday, 23 September 1787 at Acle, Norfolk.3 William lived in February 1807 at Herringfleet, Suffolk.5
He married Hannah Read, daughter of John Read and Margaret Batcheldor, in a Church of England ceremony on Sunday, 1 March 1807 at Herringfleet, Suffolk. He was 19 and his wife Hannah was 19. They were married by Banns *which were read on the 8th of Feburary, the 22nd of Februay and early March ;William signed with a mark and Hannah signed with her name. The wedding certificate was also signed by Sarah Read. Others who may have attended the wedding include John Read as father of the bride, Elizabeth Allen as mother of the groom and James Manthorpe as father of the groom. Brothers and sisters who may have attended include John Manthorpe, Charles Manthorpe and Jonathan Manthorpe. Hannah and William went on to have some eleven children together.5,6
William's child Lydia received her baptism on Sunday, 11 May 1817 at Herringfleet, Suffolk.7,8
His father died 24 March 1840 at the age of 81. William was aged 52 when this happened.
He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Hannah Read (which other records indicate is his spouse) at Herringfleet, Suffolk. He was 53 years old. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 50 years old. Also in the household were four of their children.9 His occupation was recorded as being an agricultural labourer in the census.9 His occupation was recorded as being an agricultural labourer in the census.10
He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census with Hannah Read as his spouse at 13 Hall Basin(?), Herringfleet, Suffolk. He was 63 years old.10 His occupation was recorded as being an agricultural labourer in the census.4
He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Hannah Read as his spouse at 2 Old Hall, Herringfleet, Suffolk. He was 73 years old. Also living in the house was their granddaughter Eliza and a lodger.4 His occupation was recorded as being a labourer in the census.11
He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Hannah Read as his spouse at Manthorpe's Lake, Herringfleet, Suffolk. He was 83 years old.11
His wife Hannah died 13 August 1872 at the age of 85 at the approximate age of 86, leaving him a widower at age 85.
William died just nine months after the death of his wife circa April 1873 at Suffolk.12,1 His body was interred on 17 April 1873 at Herringfleet, Suffolk. His wife's burial the previous year was the burial prior to his own.12
