Neil was born on Sunday, 2 December 1821 at Aird, So Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland.2

He married Mary Jane Nicholson, daughter of James Nicholson and Margaret McDonald, in her father's house in a Prebyterian ceremony at Mount Misery Browns Diggings on Tuesday, 11 November 1856 at Smythesdale, Victoria..3,4

Neil died on 22 May 1892 at the Melbourne suburb of Kew at age 70.2 His body was interred at Booroondara General Cemetery at the Melbourne suburb of Kew.5
