Harriet Manthorpe was born in 1862 at Herringfleet, Suffolk.1 She was the daughter of George Marston Manthorpe and Caroline Oldman.1 Her occupation was recorded as being a scholar in the census.1

She was recorded as living with her parents, Emanuel Olman (who may have been her older stepbrother), two siblings and twin boys of Emanuel Oldman in the 1871 census at Manthorpe's Lake, Herringfleet, Suffolk.1
