John Edward Tapley was also known as Edward.3 NOTE: The information on this page is my research to date and is subject to change as I become better informed. He may have been born circa 1835 at England.2 He was likely born circa 1837 at Mauritius.3 He was the son of Richard Edward Tapley and Arabella McDonald.2 John Edward Tapley emigrated with his parents and father's family from Plymouth on 31 July 1838 on the "Rajasthan" with their 9 children and at least one grandchild in a second class cabin.4,2 He witnessed the immigration of Thomas Tapley and Mary Morford on 16 November 1838 at Port Adelaide, South Australia.4,2
He presumably lived with his parents at Gilbert Street, in Adelaide, in October 1850.5 John Edward Tapley was an accountant.1 John lived in 1857 at the Adelaide suburb of Norwood.3
He married Ellen Masters Baker, daughter of Reverend Edward Knight Baker and Ruth Wayte, They were married at her parent's residence in a Congregationalist ceremony conducted by Ellen's father at Hillside House on Friday, 25 December 1857 at Morphett Vale, South Australia.. Others attending the wedding include Ruth Wayte as mother of the bride, Arabella McDonald as mother of the groom and Richard Edward Tapley as father of the groom. Brothers and sisters who may have attended include Harriet Whitridge Baker and Emma Frances Baker. John and Ellen went on to have two children together.6,7,8
John was involved in an interesting incident in India:
problematically, he was still married to Ellen.3
John travelled to Madras in 1860. He stayed their briefly before settling in Calcutta. Form there, John sent Ellen letters and small sums of money.1
John Edward Tapley married Sarah Clapp Brown in 1862 at Calcutta, India.3 John Edward Tapley was also known as Howard Tapley Clarton.3
John and Ellen story quickly took a turn for the worse:
However in 1863 when the sums stopped coming she travelled to Calcutta where she found him living under the name H. Clarton with another woman [whom he had married the year before]. He refused her request that he return to Australia with her.1,3
He took up a position with the Bengal Department of Revenue, Agriculture and Commerce and wrote reports.1 John Edward Tapley and Ellen Masters Baker were divorced in October 1873 and the Chief Justice stated that "it appeared to him the desertion and adultery were clearly proved". After the divorce, Ellen reverted to her maiden name.9,10
John died On his death certificate it was stated that his parents were Richard Tapley Clarton and Arabella Clarton, formerly McDonald on 6 January 1903 at the Melbourne suburb of Elsternwick of alcoholism and pnuemonia.3,11 His body was interred on 8 January 1903.3

John Tapley had been instrumental in saving a small boy from drowning. An army doctor, by the name of Brown, was present at the time, and was impressed by the rescue, and invited the young man home to dinner. When he told his wife and family about the incident, his younger daughter, Sarah, was enamoured of the event. A mutual attraction developed, and John and Sarah were subsequently married.
