Matilda Louisa Fooks was baptised on Friday, 23 November 1832 at Melcombe Regis, Weymouth, Dorset.1 She was born on 23 November 1832 at Weymouth, Dorset.1 She was the daughter of William Samuel Fooks and Maria Jane Richardson. She presumably lived with her parents at Melcombe Regis, Weymouth, Dorset, in 1837.2 Matilda Louisa Fooks emmigrated from London on 5 July 1840 on the 'Waterloo' with her parents and three younger siblings, her grandmother, along with other members of her father's family.3,4,5 After a voyage of about 5 months John arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 9 November 1840 with her family.4,6,5
It seems that Matilda Louisa Fooks had an affair with her aunt's husband, John Berjew (who was into his fifties) resulting in the birth of Charles Albert Thompson Fooks. This may explain why John's occupation went from schoolmaster to cab driver and his family moved to Stanley on Tasmania's North West Coast.1
Matilda Louisa Fooks married John Thomas Lewis at Trinity Anglican Church in 1858 at the Melbourne suburb of Sandridge (Port Melbourne).7
Matilda died on 29 December 1911 at 40 Albert Road, South Melbourne, at age 79 She died of 'Chronic Bronchitis, Cardiac Dilation and Failure'..7 She was buried on 31 December 1911 at at Melbourne General Cemetery in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton.1
