John Taylor was born circa 1807 at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire.2 "About two miles north-east from Stanstead, in the same hundred (Braughin), stands the pleasant village of Hunsdon, in the parish of its name. From the church, and other positions in the neighbourhood, some beautiful views may be obtained, including the course of the Stort to join the Lea ... The parish [1839] contains about 600 inhabitants."3
He was a witness at the wedding of Thomas Bush and Eliza Dearsley at St. Peter's on Saturday, 12 December 1829 at Roydon, Essex.4
He married Susannah Darby, a widow of 58 years with as many as a dozen children, daughter of Richard Darby and Sarah Peachy, in a Church of England ceremony at St. Luke's in Old Street on Wednesday, 10 November 1830 at Finsbury, London. John was 35 years younger than Susannah..1
He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Susannah Darby (which other records indicate is his spouse) at Roydon Hamlet, Essex. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 35 years old.5 John Taylor was a farmer on 7 June 1841.5 He was a farmer of 25 acres employing a man and boy in March 1851.2
He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census with Susannah Darby as his spouse at Roydon Hamlet, Essex. He was recorded as being 44 years old. Also living in the house were a servant and a lodger.2 On 29 July 1854 John was listed as the person to apply to when Richard Darby's property at Roydon was sold.6 He was a 'small farmer' in April 1861.7
He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census at Roydon Hamlet, Essex. He was recorded as being 54 years old. Also in the house was a servant, Anne Bush.7 He was a builder's labourer in April 1871.8
He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Anne Bush as his spouse at Albert Place, Tottenham, London. His age was recorded as being 64 years old. John and Ann were now apparently living as husband and wife; Ann was his deceased wife's daughter.8
