Herbert Fooks was born on 13 April 1871 at Perth, Tasmania.2,3,1 He was the son of Rev. Samuel Berjew Fookes and Louisa Jean Hobkirk.1 Herbert Fooks was baptised at St. Andrew's Anglican Church on Thursday, 18 May 1871 at Perth, Tasmania.4

On 15 November 1872 his brother Arthur died at the age of 5 killed by the kick of a horse in a paddock adjoining their home in Perth, Tasmania.5,6,7 He was a student at at Battery Point Public School, Hobart, in June 1884. He represented them at football.8

He attended the Mayor's Fancy Dress Ball at The Exhibition Building, in Hobart, in October 1888; his costume was describe by the newspaper report as 'Sambo.9'

His father died 2 November 1892 at the age of 70. Herbert was aged 21 when this happened.

Herbert died on 9 January 1900 at Sandy Bay, Hobart, at age 28.1 His body was interred at Queensborough Cemetery at Sandy Bay, Hobart.4
