Edith was born on Friday, 10 December 1880 at the Adelaide suburb of Hyde Park.1 She was the daughter of John Darby and Edith Watson.1 Edith Beatrice Darby won two prizes at school; one for examination, one for science on 18 December 1895 at the Adelaide suburb of Woodville.2
Tragedy struck the Darby family when John and Edith's son Kenny Darby, not quite two years of age, was shot dead by his seventeen year old brother Eustace on 23 February 1896. There was an inquest, and a verdict brought down of accidental death with no blame being attached to anyone.3,4
Edith Beatrice Darby passed her preliminary examination for in September 1896 at Adelaide University, in Adelaide.5 She passed the Adelaide University Junior Public examination, but was listed in the 'average' class as she was over-age. She seemed to be a student at Woodville High School in December 1897.6 She was appointed as Pupil Teacher on 15 September 1898 at Kilkenny, South Australia.7,8
Edith Beatrice Darby was appointed as Pupil Teacher in the domestic economy centre, a corrugated iron building 45 feet by 35 feet which was set up "as a school of housewifery and laundry work" and later, cookery. It was run by a Domestic Economy Instructor, an assistant and Edith. Students would attend from their school for a half day a week. They would also travel to schools to teach students there on 11 December 1900 at South Australia.9,10,11 Edith Beatrice Darby obtained a second class pass in singing from Adelaide University in November 1901.12 She sung a song - "The Better Land" - in a competition in aid of the Woodville Methodist parsonage on 23 November 1901 at Town Hall, in Port Adelaide, South Australia.13 She gave a cookery demonstration to parents, officials and politicians at on 9 May 1902 at Goodwood School, in South Australia.14
Edith Beatrice Darby was conducting classes on-site at a number of schools. Two other assistent teachers had joined the Domestic Economy Centre in July 1903.11 She was promoted to junior assitant at the domestic economy centre on 1 March 1904.15
Edith Beatrice Darby resigned her position and took up the role of head of the domestic economy centre in the in May 1904 at Albany School, in Western Australia.16
Edith Beatrice Darby married Philip Herbert on Thursday, 25 January 1917 at the Perth suburb of St. Albans.17
Her father died 2 July 1930 at the age of 76. Edith was aged 49 when this happened. Edith lived in September 1930 at South Perth, Western Australia.18
