James was born in 1884 at the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.³ He was the son of Own Joseph Growney and Margaret Oakley.^1,2

He married Catherine Oaten, daughter of Charles Henry Oaten and Catherine Carroll, in 1911 at Collingwood..⁴ James Edward Growney was a bootmaker in 1914.⁵ James and Catherine lived in 1914 at at 125 Rupert Street in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood.⁵ James was a private with the 60th Battalion in the Great War.⁶

James died on 28 April 1920 at Melbourne.⁶ His body was interred at Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery on 29 April 1920 at the Melbourne suburb of Coburg. He is buried in the Roman Catholic section, plot CO-RC*D***424, and is buried with his wife Catherine and her father Charles..^7,6
