Hector Hugh Sutherland

Hector was born in 1804.³

Although Hector and his descendants and ancestors have Mackay ancestry it goes back further than originally thought.

Hector's father wasn't a Mackay/McCoy but one of his earlier forefathers branched off from a family of Mackays/McCoys into the Sutherland Clan somehow during the middle-ages.

Thus the Sutherland Clan genealogist, Mark Sutherland-Fisher, has us listed under the heading "Clan Mackay Connections" of the Sutherland DNA Project at Family Tree DNA. It's just a question of how and when it happened (ie migration, or an illegitimate son for example).⁴

He married Margaret Mckay, on Friday, 7 March 1828 at Tongue, Sutherland, Scotland..⁵

Hector and his wife Margaret emigrated circa 1853 on the 'New Zealander'. Also on board were their 10 children.^6,7 Hector arrived at Portland, Victoria, circa 1853. Unfortunately Margaret died on the voyage, leaving Hector to continue alone.^6,8
He was a stone mason.⁹

Hector, as the father of the groom, may have attended the wedding of Hugh and Margaret Nicholson in a Wesleyan ceremony at the house of Donald Nicholson on Tuesday, 31 October 1865 at Forbes, New South Wales. Although not the oldest child, she was the first to be married - she also seems to have understated her age by as much as two years. Others who may have attended include Margaret Brown as mother of the bride and Donald Nicholson as father of the bride. Margaret and Hugh went on to have nine children together.⁹ Hector was born in 1892 at the Sydney suburb of Campbelltown.³
