Henry Robert Oaten was born in 1870 at Clifton, Bristol.1 He was the son of Henry Oaten and Jane Strickland.1 Henry Robert Oaten was baptised at Pip and Jay (St. Phillip and St. Jacob) on Sunday, 28 May 1871 at Bristol.1

Henry Robert Oaten married Florence Farler, daughter of Alfred Farler and Elizabeth Russett, in 1894 at Bristol.1 Henry Robert Oaten was a publican.1 Henry and Florence retirement in 1956 at their Bristol pub (The Rail Road Tavern in the Dings area of St Phillips). Previously, they had run pubs at The Volunteer, New Street, St Judes from 1925-1928; the Cambridge, Oxford Street, Totterdown in 1928 and the Beaufort Arms, Beaufort Street, Barton Hill in 1935. The Kelly's Directory of 1906 confirms that Robert Henry Oaten lived in Brougham Street, Barton Hill, Bristol.1
